Just like John Lennon, we have eight days in our week, and on our final day, we have something special for you: we look at 15 iconic pieces of Vienna architecture, constructed out of that most basic building block: bricks. The Romans brought this skill with them, and it was later updated by the Bohemians, particularly in Favoriten. Indeed, Wienerberg is now the largest maker of bricks in the world, and 200 years old this summer.
Why do we respond so warmly to these buildings? Eugene will celebrate the range of Ziegelarchitektur in Vienna, and show that there are more of them than you realise.
Amongst others, we will look at Arena, Marxhalle, MAK, a Roman wall, the Greek Orthodox church and Brotfabrik.
