• VWW: Feminist Tour for men, by men

    28. Juli 2020 18:00 bis 20:15

Come and explore Brigittenau like nobody ever has before. Two men show you a female dynamic, and 21st century politics. Vienna is a pioneer city in gender-mainstreaming and progressive social attitudes, and we want to bring this to life in a tour of one of Vienna’s less-visited – and therefore cooler – quarters.

Your guide Persy (Bulayumi) – from Kagran – will look at how migration, ethnicity and representation play into feminism and women’s experience of living in Vienna. Your guide Eugene (Quinn) finds that the soul of Wien is deeply feminine, and he wants to celebrate the liberation available to men who embrace their full personality, including the freedom to explore less binary roles and responsibilities.

Women are of course welcome on the tour, but our focus is on opening up feminist ideas for the other half of the population, who may be less familiar with this topic. The future is female, and women’s issues do not just affect women.

If you are surprised by the concept of this tour, its origins are interesting. Eugene Quinn was approached by Amira Ben Saoud, a journalist who writes mainly for Der Standard, and also co-curates the (excellent) feminist Business RiotFest. She wondered if I could make a tour about feminism, as part of the festival (which happens each March in Vienna – though the 2020 iteration was cancelled due to Corona). I said yes, researched the tour concept, and then heard nothing from Amira. She had decided to ask somebody else – the specialist Vienna tour guide Petra Unger (an excellent guide) – to make the tour instead. So I had a tour on file, but no platform. I decided to make it myself, along with my new best friend, Persy Bulayumi, who comes straight out of Kagran.

This walk is part of Vienna Walking Week, when space and place is demonstrating that you do not need to leave the city to experience the exotic, the sexy and the new. #TourismForLocals
