A Geh-Cafe event, in cooperation with Wien zu Fuss.
Vienna becomes much more open and friendly when you walk around with a small child. Strangers talk to you, and join in with the joy and enthusiasm of babies and young children.
But it can be difficult with a buggie. And so some new parents stay at home – finding the challenge of walking too great. So we will explore how much fun Vienna is with a pram and young child. Walk leader Eugene Quinn is father to a 5-year old son. Together they have many adventures around Vienna, waving at U2 drivers, chatting to MA48 people, splashing in puddles, dancing and climbing trees. Eugene took 4 months of paid paternity leave, when his son Josef was a baby (see pictures below). And he was surprised how few Austrian fathers take this opportunity. Wien makes being a parent easy – much easier and less expensive than London.
On this short tour of Augarten, we will look at nature and buildings, people, food and opportunities for fun with children. Before Josef’s birth, locals would see Eugene singing in the park or dancing in the U-Bahn, and worry about him. Now when he sings and dances around the city with his kid, people comment what a great pappi he is.
There is so much we can learn from children, and their approach to the city – enthusiastic, open, creative, spontaneous, full of wonder – and making friends easily.
This walk is free, and no registration is required. At the end, we will have a (free) picnic together, outside the (very effective) Mobilitaetsagentur, with lovely food and drinks.
When: Wednesday 12 July, 2017, 15:00-17:00
Meeting Point: 20. Jaegerstrasse 2. U2 Taborstrasse.
